Uganda: Pibid Celebrates 20 Years of Transforming Uganda's Banana Sub Sector Through Value Addition

A decade of resilience and innovation is how the Director General of the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development Dr. Florence Muranga, described its milestone of transforming the Banana subsector in Uganda through Value addition.

Dr. Muranga said as the budget process is underway hopes are high of increasing produce of dry bananas from 1.4 tonnes to 10 -14 tonnes per day with hopes of budget allocation next financial year

"We are looking at increasing our production to 14 tonnes this year with the help the budget we proposed to 50 billion as the budget process is underway we believe the executive will help us" Dr Muranga said.

The Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development has marked the second of transforming the banana subsector through value addition and farmers empowerment.

While the banana entity has hit 20 years of impacting banana farmers and contributing the economy, management decries limited financing imploring the government to increase funds to close to 50 billion this next financial year.

Hopes are high for the agency on increasing its production from 1.4 tonnes to about 10 tonnes of dry bananas a day with the help of Ishara industrial technology park to enable full export potential and import substitution.
