Efforts to transform the Rwamanyonyi Chwezi cultural sites in Bufunda Division, Ibanda Municipality, into a vibrant tourist destination have gained momentum.

This initiative aims to preserve the cultural heritage of the region while boosting tourism in Ibanda District.

At the core of this project is Tondism, a traditional faith that has been revived in Uganda.

Tondism is considered the first religion practiced across the country, uniting people from various tribes and cultural backgrounds.

It is deeply rooted in reverence for ancestral heritage, with significant cultural and spiritual sites such as the Rwamanyonyi Chwezi sites holding immense importance.

Rugumiriza Tumwine, the Tondism Faith leader for the South-Western region, revealed that plans are underway to renovate the historic Rwamanyonyi Chwezi sites, which are tied to the ancient Bachwezi dynasty.

"We are committed to reviving the Rwamanyonyi Chwezi sites to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Bachwezi and attract tourists to Ibanda," Tumwine explained.

"One of the unique features here is a two-meter-deep hole in the rock, believed to have spiritual healing powers. This is an extraordinary attraction we hope to highlight."

Tumwine emphasized the need for collective efforts in bringing this vision to life, calling on government and political leaders to support the project.

"We urge the government and all leaders to join hands with us in refurbishing the Rwamanyonyi Chwezi site. Together, we can turn this into a hub for cultural tourism and economic growth," he added.

The Rwamanyonyi Chwezi sites, deeply tied to the history of the Bachwezi dynasty, have significant potential to draw both local and international visitors.

With the planned renovations, Tondism aims to create a destination that celebrates Uganda's cultural diversity while contributing to the development of Ibanda District.
