Uganda: UDA Political Party Registration Update

27 January 2025

Political analysts say that the confusion and uncertainty on Mpuuga's Democratic Alliance remain high and may injure it's so are its motives.

This follows the announcement that the Civic Group would morph into a Political party and at 70% registration progress by 6th December and this being contradicted by Kimaanya Kabonera legislator Dr. Abed Bwanika.

On 6TH December 2024, Malibu Gardens is filled to the brim with supporters clad in orange, green and white. It's here that Nyendo Mukungwe legislator and Parliamentary Commissioner Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba unveiled a new chapter in his political journey, 'The Democratic Alliance '

'It's beginning as a civic platform, in a few months, we are consulting it will be an electoral platform, we shall sponsor candidates, including the President, Members of Parliament, Mayors, Councilors, everywhere.

For avoidance of any doubts, after the mass announcement, we inquired about how soon it would take the DA would morph into a fully registered Political Party.

' The process of registering a political party is not an event, so we are in the process, the processes are already ongoing , I can tell you that we are probably we are at 70%" Mpuuga said

In sharp contrast with Mpuuga, Kimaanya Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika gave us a different narrative

'We do not intend, to transit to change, DA into a political party' Bwanika said Uncertainty is high, on who is telling the truth about the progress of registration of a political party, and the other completely distancing himself from any such plans. Political analysts say that it's time for Mpuuga and his team to be consistent. With 2026 drawing closer, Israel Mayengo, a political analyst says whether registered or unregistered, that Civic Platform's gospel and intentions are still unclear

'I for one, I do not understand it. Actually, I am hearing of something like that for the very first time. So, Mpuuga and the group ought to explain to us what they are meaning. But I think that is not the most important thing, the most important thing is a Uganda that is safe, prosperous for every Ugandan"

Mayengo insists that Mpuuga's formation of the Democratic alliance is direct affront to the opposition's fight against NRM.

Most of these groups that are coming up, are only have one intention of dislodging the NRM from leading the country and that appears to be getting further away, and further away, the more they split, the happier the NRM"

With the challenges facing Uganda's being almost the same, Mayengo opines that Mpuuga's approach of popularizing electoral reforms, is misguided because the focus should be on changing the constitution to tackle all the Ugandan governance issues including all the answered questions.

'They should start with a review of the constitution, these ones are working on questions of electoral laws, electoral laws originate from the constitution , if they do without revision of the constitution they won't manage, they will not change nothing about the Electoral commission'

Mayengo says that Uganda has decade long problems, the question of Buganda, has not been solved, and this is just one of the many. We need a rotational system of governance, and Federalism should be revisited. Mayego said
