The Busoga region is poised for an economic transformation as the Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) launches its Model Villages project.
This initiative, part of the Village Agriculture Model (VAM) program, aims to establish 12 model villages across Busoga, each serving as a hub for sustainable agricultural practices and community development.
"We are excited to launch this project, which will transform the lives of thousands of people in Busoga," said Anthony Mula, Director General of the BCD. "We believe that this project will have a significant impact on the local economy and improve the livelihoods of our people."
The first phase of the project will see the establishment of three model villages in Namyombe, Namayingo District, Mashaga, Mayuge District, and Busana, Kamuli District. Each village will have approximately 600 households, with each household providing at least one acre of land for farming.
The BCD has partnered with Kasolwe Agro Farm to provide local poultry birds to the farmers, which will help boost poultry production in the region.
Mula also says the consortium is also working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, China Agriculture University, and Makerere University to provide technical advice, quality seeds, and training to the farmers.
According to Mula, the project will focus on growing crops like Soya, Maize, Cassava, and Sim Sim, as well as coffee. "This initiative is part of the Village Agriculture Model (VAM) program, which aims to drive Busoga out of poverty," Mula emphasized.
The Model Villages project is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, creating new jobs and stimulating economic growth in the region.
The project will also improve the livelihoods of thousands of people in the region, providing them with a sustainable source of income and improving their overall well-being.
