South Africa: Mother Sentenced for Child Neglect

- A 36-year-old mother was sentenced to two years' direct imprisonment wholly suspended for five years' for child neglect.

On Wednesday, 07 August 2024, the complainant alleged that he received a call from an anonymous person about children being left alone in a house while the mother was at a tavern. The complainant went to the house where he found two minors, aged four and one year old, alone.

Efforts by the community to locate the mother yielded no success. They reported the matter to the police and the mother was traced and arrested for child neglect.

On Friday, 14 February 2025, the mother was sentenced by the Phuthaditjaba Magistrate's Court for child neglect.

The investigating officer is Detective Sergeant Malefu Mbule of Phuthaditjaba FCS Unit.
