Kenya: Sand Transporters to Obtain Licenses From Nema in New Law

Nairobi — All transporters of sand in the country will be required to obtain licenses in order to operate.

This is after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) announced the commencement of the 2024 Sand Harvesting Regulations to promote sustainable sand use and environmental protection.

The regulator has therefore called on all stakeholders in the sector, including transporters, to fully comply with the new provisions.

"The Sand Harvesting Regulations, 2024 require that you obtain a sand transportation permit from NEMA," NEMA Director General Mamo Boru said.

"Therefore, all sand transporters are therefore required to immediately apply for a Permit to Transport Sand by logging into the NEMA website."

The regulations, which were initially posted on the Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 197 (Legislative Supplement No. 86) and Legal Notice No. 179 on November 4, 2024, were developed in line with the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) No. 8 of 1999.

"The main objective of the regulations is to ensure sustainable utilization of sand as a resource, while at the same time protecting the environment," read a part in the statement.
