Zimbabwe: Hero's Welcome for New IOC President Kirsty Coventry

NEWLY-elected International Olympics Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry is back in the country after her landslide victory in Greece Thursday.

Coventry received a hero's welcome at Robert Mugabe lnternational Airport Sunday afternoon, as hundreds gathered to give her a befitting homecoming.

Aged 41, Coventry became the youngest IOC president in history, also becoming the first female and African to assume the post.

Amongst those that welcomed Coventry were several government officials including Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises, Monica Mutsvangwa, Information Communications Technology (ICT) Minister Tatenda Mavetera, Deputy Minister of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture Emily Jesaya, Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Chairperson Gerald Mlotshwa, among others.

Coventry's return to Zimbabwe is mainly to officially resign as the Minister of Sport and bid farewell to President Emmerson Mnangagwa before she shifts base to Lusanne, Greece where IOC headquarters are located.
