Today has marked a historic milestone in Uganda's power sector as Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) officially took over power distribution from UMEME, following the end of the concession agreement that began on February 1, 2005.
Paul Mwesigwa, the Managing Director of UEDCL, expressed his gratitude and confidence in the company's ability to manage power distribution effectively.
He highlighted that the government's decision to entrust UEDCL with this responsibility was based on its proven governance structures, operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and digital transformation.
"The government's decision to allow us to take over power distribution was mainly based on our presentation as UEDCL and demonstration of governance, efficiency, financial sustainability, digital operation environment, and more," Mwesigwa stated.
UEDCL has undertaken an extensive recruitment process, completing it in a record time of 75 days. The company interviewed over 2,995 candidates using a combination of online and physical interview models to ensure an efficient and effective selection process.
"Our target for this year is to achieve up to 300,000 new electricity connections within the next twelve months. Mechanisms and models have been put in place to realize this ambitious goal," Mwesigwa noted.
Mwesigwa also extended appreciation to UMEME's management, staff, and board for their cooperation throughout the transition period. He emphasized the cordial relationship between the two entities and expressed optimism for continued collaboration in the energy sector.
"UEDCL is grateful to UMEME management, the staff, and the board for the support accorded during and before the transition. We have enjoyed a cordial relationship and look forward to more collaboration," he added.
Acknowledging the hard work put in by his team, Mwesigwa praised their dedication to ensuring a seamless transition.
"We have spent sleepless nights to ensure that the transition is seamless, and it is. I will forever be indebted to them," he said.
The takeover by UEDCL is expected to bring a new era of power distribution in Uganda, with promises of improved efficiency, reliability, and expansion of electricity access to more Ugandans.
The transition marks the beginning of a new phase in the country's energy sector, setting the stage for further advancements in electricity distribution and customer service.
