Uganda: Mbale District Kadhi Urges Public to Avoid Hate Speech,Disinformation On Social Media

31 March 2025

Issa Ahmad Yusuf, the Masaba District Kadhi in Mbale, has urged the public to refrain from using hate speech and spreading disinformation, emphasizing the importance of research and consultation before making public statements, especially in the digital age.

His call comes at a time when social media has become a dominant platform for sharing ideas some of which, unfortunately, include harmful rhetoric and defamatory remarks.

He reminded the public that statements made online can have serious consequences, including legal action.

"The power of words, especially on social media, cannot be underestimated," Yusuf said. "It's essential to think before you speak or post. What you share online can have far-reaching consequences, including legal ones."

He noted that, unlike traditional print and electronic media, social media often facilitates the spread of unverified and unbalanced information.

He urged authorities to regulate social media use and hold those spreading disinformation accountable.

His message serves as a reminder to practice responsible communication and understand the impact of words, calling on individuals to engage in respectful and informed discourse both online and offline.
