Uganda: DP Delegates to Elect New Leadership On May 30

According to the roadmap presented at a press conference held at the party headquarters in Mengo, the election process will commence at the grassroots level, beginning with village-level elections from April 1st to 6.

The Democratic Party (DP) has set May 30th as the date for its highly anticipated Delegates Conference, during which the party will elect new leadership.

This announcement was made as DP unveiled its official roadmap for the internal elections, a process expected to shape the party's direction moving forward.

According to the roadmap presented at a press conference held at the party headquarters in Mengo, the election process will commence at the grassroots level, beginning with village-level elections from April 1st to 6.

Parish elections will follow from April 7 to 13, while sub-county elections will take place between April 14th and 20th.

The process will culminate in constituency-level elections, set for April 21st to 27th, paving the way for the Delegates Conference at the end of May.

During the Delegates Conference, DP delegates will elect top party officials, including the party president, deputy president, secretary-general, treasurer, and other key positions.

Unveiling the roadmap at the party headquarters in Mengo, DP President General Norbert Mao urged all party members intending to participate in the elections to ensure they are duly registered.

"This is like a bus; it finds passengers at the stage waiting for it. Members who are not prepared and ready will be left behind," Mao stated.

He further reaffirmed his authority as the party's leader, challenging those who oppose his leadership to exit the party.

"You must respect the current leadership," Mao asserted.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of internal tensions within DP, following an agreement signed between Mao and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

A faction within DP has since been pushing for Mao's removal, questioning his commitment to the party's independence.

With the roadmap now in place, it remains to be seen whether those opposed to Mao will participate in the upcoming elections or seek alternative political avenues.

The DP's internal elections are expected to be a defining moment for the party's future leadership and strategy.
