South Africa: Gabadinho Mhango Could Lose His House Over Unpaid Loan

Nedbank says Mhango owes more than R1.2-million and wants to auction his house for at least R650,000.

Mhango is also suing Marumo Gallants for R828,000 for using his image without paying him.

Football star Gabadinho Mhango is in danger of losing his home after Nedbank dragged him to court over an unpaid bond.

The bank says the Marumo Gallants striker owes them more than R1.2-million. They want the Johannesburg High Court to allow them to auction his house for at least R650,000.

According to court papers, Mhango missed several home loan instalments. He was given 10 days to respond to the case but missed the deadline. That means the court could now go ahead without hearing his side.

Sources told Sunday World that Mhango is hoping to use money owed to him from image rights to pay off his debt.

The footballer has taken his club, Marumo Gallants, to court. He says they used his name and face to promote games on social media without paying him. He wants R828,000 for it.

Mhango said the club posted a matchday team sheet and an interview with him on social media, but he did not receive a cent.

He claims the rights belong to him after his agency, Prosport, signed the deal while he was still at Swallows. Since Gallants took over the club, he argues they are now responsible for paying him.

Court papers show that Mhango's lawyers sent two letters of demand last year, in January and September. Each letter asked the club for R400,000 or more. Gallants did not respond.

Mhango could not be reached for comment. But his legal fight with the club continues--and it could decide whether he keeps his house.
