South Africa: President Ramaphosa Appoints Minister Angie Motshekga As Acting President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, to serve as Acting President of the Republic of South Africa from 17 to 19 June 2025.

"The appointment, in accordance with section 90 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, follows the President's visit to Canada to attend the G7 Leadership Summit, as well as Deputy President Paul Mashatile's concurrent working visit to Moscow in the Russian Federation," the Presidency said in a statement on Tuesday.

President Ramaphosa concluded his working visit to Canada, where he participated in the G7 Summit Outreach Session, on the margins of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada.

The Group of Seven consists of the largest advanced economies namely: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The European Union also participates in G7 Summits, although not a member.

Meanwhile, Mashatile arrived in Moscow on Tuesday in the Russian Federation on a working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral economic and trade ties between South Africa and Russia.

The Deputy President was received by the Deputy Head of State Protocol, Andrei Milyaev; the Deputy Director of the African Department, Andrei Stolyarov and South Africa's International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister, Alvin Botes.

The visit of the Deputy President will focus on enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries in sectors such as agriculture, automotive, energy and mining industries, as well as science and technology cooperation. - SAnews.gov.za
