Uganda: Former Rwampara East MP Charles Ngabirano Eyes Comeback in NRM Race

Former Rwampara East County Member of Parliament, Dr. Charles Ngabirano, has formally declared his political comeback after being nominated to contest in the forthcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.

Dr. Ngabirano was nominated on Wednesday at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, with the process presided over by Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi.

Speaking to the press shortly after his nomination, Dr. Ngabirano expressed renewed commitment to the development agenda he previously championed while serving as MP.

He cited several key initiatives he hopes to build on if re-elected, including a coffee processing project that he says has improved household incomes in the constituency.

"I still have important work to do for the people of Rwampara East. From enhancing road networks and expanding electricity coverage to ensuring access to clean water, these projects remain vital," Ngabirano said.

He underscored the importance of continuity in development programmes, adding that securing more government support and funding would be among his top priorities.

Calling for a peaceful and issue-based campaign, Dr. Ngabirano urged both his supporters and political opponents to refrain from violence, noting that elections should not divide the community.

"We must maintain peace. Our community deserves unity, not hostility," he said, warning that any attempts to disrupt the electoral process through violence would not be tolerated. "I am peaceful, but I will not allow anyone to destabilise this process."

Dr. Ngabirano, who previously served two consecutive terms in Parliament, lost the seat in the 2021 general elections to Julius Tusiime Karuhanga. Karuhanga, the incumbent, has also been nominated to contest in the NRM primaries, setting the stage for a highly competitive race in the constituency.

The Rwampara East NRM contest is expected to draw significant attention, with both aspirants wielding substantial grassroots support and development track records.
