Nairobi — A security guard stationed at Kenya Power's Stima Plaza in Nairobi was fatally shot during protests held Wednesday by young Kenyans marking the first anniversary of last year's anti-finance bill demonstrations.

In a statement, Kenya Power confirmed that the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m.

The guard, identified as Mr. Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, was an employee of Hatari Security and had been on duty at the Kolobot Road entrance when he was shot.

He was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

"We regret the unfortunate death of Mr. Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," Kenya Power said.

The protests were part of a commemoration by Gen-Z demonstrators, marking one year since the proposed finance bill was dropped by President William Ruto following public backlash.
