Uganda: Renewed National IDs Ready for Pickup, Says Nira

The National Identification and Registration Authority(NIRA) has said the renewed national IDs for those who applied for renewal are ready for picking.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Claire Ollama, a registrar with NIRA said production of the National ID cards commenced last week.

"Production commenced and last week we produced 100,000 cards which have been dispatched to different parts of the country. This means this project is beginning to deliver the fruits we sought to deliver," Ollama said.

She however asked members of the public to be patient as more notifications to alert them on picking their national IDs continue to come.

"We ask people to be patient as we are to send you message on where to pick your national ID card. When message comes to your phone it will tell you where to pick the card."

Ugandans' first batch of national IDs were printed and issued between 2014 and 2015 and after 10 years, they expired last year in 2024 and this year 2025.

Government recently extended the expiry period for one year.

At least 15.8 million national identity cards are expected to expire by August this year.

The ongoing mass registration exercise is meant to renew the national IDs but also add advanced security features for easy identification.

NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo recently said only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered, of the 45.9 million according to last year's census.
