Uganda: Munyagwa to Launch Common Man's Party Ahead of 2026 Elections

Mubarak Munyagwa is set to launch the Common Man's Party, a rebranded version of the Uganda Economic Party. Munyagwa, who will serve as the party's President General, is to unveiled the new party at Jacaranda today.

The launch of the Common Man's Party comes at a time when Uganda is gearing up for the 2026 general elections, scheduled to take place in January. With many new political parties emerging in recent months, the competition for power is expected to be fierce

Munyagwa's decision to launch a new party is seen as a significant development in Uganda's opposition politics. The former Kawempe South MP had publicly distanced himself from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in June 2024, citing poor management under the current leadership.

The Common Man's Party is expected to focus on issues that affect ordinary Ugandans, with Munyagwa positioning himself as a champion of the common man.

However, the party's long-term viability will depend on its ability to build solid structures, mobilise grassroots support, and present a compelling alternative to dominant political forces.

As Uganda heads into the 2026 elections, one thing is clear: the political landscape is becoming increasingly crowded and complex.

Whether the Common Man's Party will emerge as a major player remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - Munyagwa's entry into the fray has shaken things up.
