Kenya: Safaricom Leads Kenya's Mobile SIM Card Subscriptions, CA Data

Nairobi — Safaricom still dominates Kenya's SIM card subscriptions, data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows.

Out of 100 percent, the telco's SIM card penetration stood at 63.3 percent between January and March 2025, with other players such as Airtel, among others, sharing the remainder.

CA's Q3 Sector Statistics Report for the 2024/2025 fiscal year shows that Safaricom added 1.7 million new mobile subscribers, pushing its total subscriber numbers to 48.2 million.

Industry-wide, active mobile subscriptions rose by 6.7 percent to 76.2 million, resulting in a penetration rate of 145.3 percent, mainly driven up by various customer win-back campaigns run by operators during the review period.

The growth was also replicated in other sectors, with mobile money subscriptions, mobile data usage, and broadband subscriptions all registering improvements.

Mobile phone penetration rate reached 139.8 percent, comprising 80.5 percent for smartphones and 59.3 percent for feature phones, boosted by increased availability of mobile devices and the expansion of mobile network infrastructure nationwide.
