Nairobi — Five Kenyan university students have returned from China after participating in the global Seeds for the Future program by Huawei, a week-long initiative aimed at exposing young talent to emerging digital technologies and fostering international collaboration.
The students -- Shem Machii, Sophy Cherono, Huldah Mwihaki, Mungai Erick, and Samuel Ochor -- were selected from different universities across Kenya.
They joined peers from other countries in exploring advancements in fields such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, and smart city infrastructure.
Over the course of the program, held from July 21 to 25, participants toured Huawei's tech exhibition halls, a smart government showcase in Longgang, and the headquarters of drone manufacturer DJI. The trip combined technical training sessions with site visits and cultural immersion activities.
Speaking at the end of the program, the students described the experience as intellectually enriching, citing exposure to global experts and interaction with peers from diverse backgrounds as a key takeaway.
The Seeds for the Future program also included forums and discussions designed to build international networks and foster a deeper understanding of how innovation can be used to solve real-world problems.
The students were awarded certificates of completion during a closing ceremony held in China.
