The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has urged Ugandan politicians to avoid divisiveness, discrimination, and political fights as the country heads towards the 2026 general elections.
He made these remarks while leading a memorial service for the late Canon Rhoda Kalema Nsibirwa, held at Namirembe Cathedral on Wednesday morning, August 6, 2025.
The former Member of Parliament and Kingdom servant passed away on Sunday, August 3.

The service, which began at 9:00 am, drew hundreds of mourners from all walks of life who gathered to pay their last respects to one of Uganda's pioneering female politicians and a dedicated cultural and national leader including the former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, ans State Minister for Kampala Kyofatogabye Kabuye. Also in attendance was the Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, Prince David Wasajja, Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko Patrick Mugumbule, and several former Katikkiros and other dignitaries.
In his sermon, Archbishop Kazimba called for unity and maturity among political leaders, warning against unnecessary political fights and selfishness.
He praised the late Kalema as a woman of virtue who led a selfless life and dedicated her efforts to serving her family, kingdom, and country without seeking worldly pleasures.
"She was an example to all--humble, honest, courageous, and a servant of the people," Kaziimba said.
Speaking on behalf of the family the Second Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda Waggwa Nsibirwa, described the deceased as a pillar of wisdom, a unifier, and a custodian of family dignity.
The Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda recalled Kalema as a personal advisor and a passionate supporter of the Ekisaakaate (youth mentorship program), which Kalema co-founded and remained actively involved in.
Representing the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Lukiiko Speaker Patrick Mugumbule said the late Canon Kalema set a great example for female politicians through her courageous leadership and devotion to national development.
In a message delivered on behalf of His Majesty the Kabaka, Mugumbule praised Kalema as a strong pillar in the fight for Buganda's interests and someone who treated all people equally, without discrimination.
Minister of state for kampala Kyofatogabye Kabuye, speaking on behalf of President Museveni, praised the deceased as a committed public servant who served the nation with dedication and integrity.
The body of Canon Rhoda Kalema was taken to her home in Muyenga after the service. It will be transported to Kiboga for burial on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
