East Africa: Kenya Targets Packaging Sector Growth With International Expo

10 August 2025

Nairobi — The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry-Nairobi Chapter (KNCC&I) and the Institute of Packaging Professionals Kenya (IOPPK) have partnered with UAE-based MXM Dubai Events to stage the 9th AgroFood-PlastPack Exhibition from August 21-23 at the Sarit Expo Centre.

The trade fair will bring together more than 200 exhibitors from 20 countries, alongside an estimated 10,000 industry participants including farmers, processors, manufacturers, technology suppliers, investors, and policymakers. The event combines three sectors -- agriculture and poultry, food processing, and plastics, paper, and tissue -- showcasing machinery, packaging solutions, storage systems, and livestock technologies.

KNCC&I-Nairobi CEO Christine Mwende said the exhibition would give Kenyan businesses exposure to global markets and new technologies.

"The AgroFood-PlastPack Exhibition is a platform for innovation, knowledge sharing, and commercial relationships that can transform our agriculture and food processing sectors," Mwende said.

Workshops, investor roundtables, and B2B matchmaking sessions will run alongside the displays to promote deal-making and technology transfer.

MXM Dubai Events organiser Ahsan Rasheed said Nairobi's role as a trade hub made it the ideal location.

"Kenya is a gateway to the East African market and a leader in agricultural innovation. We aim to deliver an event that addresses Africa's unique opportunities and challenges," he said.

IOPPK CEO Joseph Nyongesa noted that the collaboration was part of a broader push to modernise packaging in the region.

"By merging global expertise with local initiatives, we can deliver lasting benefits for businesses, professionals, and the economy," he said.

The exhibition comes as East Africa posts strong growth, with Kenya's GDP estimated at $132 billion and the World Bank projecting Sub-Saharan Africa's economy to expand 3.5% in 2025 and 4.3% by 2027. Agriculture remains a key driver, employing millions and offering one of the highest returns on investment in rural economies.
