Uganda: Do Not Leave Rural Voters Behind - Mityana Leaders Urge Urgent Sensitisation On 2026 Election Roadmap

Local leaders in Mityana District have voiced growing concern that many voters, especially those in rural areas, remain in the dark about the 2026 general election roadmap due to frequent amendments that often go unexplained.

"Its as if were are not stake holders in this whole electoral process because we have little knowledge about the 2026 electoral process yet we also need yo be informed." Kalyesubula Francis a resident of Ssekanyonyi county.

The leaders say that while the Electoral Commission has rolled out activities leading to the polls, the constant adjustments to timelines and procedures risk leaving a significant portion of the electorate uninformed and disengaged.

"We cannot talk about free and fair elections if our people do not even know when and how these activities will take place," Said Fred Wotonava mayor central Division Mityana Municipality "Each time the roadmap changes, we need an immediate effort to update and educate the public. Without that, many voters--especially in remote villages will be left behind."

According to the leaders, lack of timely voter education could disenfranchise thousands of people in the district. They are urging the Electoral Commission to intensify sensitisation efforts through community meetings, radio talk shows, and local language campaigns.

It's the duty of the Electoral Commission to make sure every eligible voter is informed," Bazzeketa Kulabirawo mayor Ttamu division. "We want to see more community outreach, more radio talk shows, and more engagement in the languages our people speak daily."

Mityana Woman MP, Sarah Nanyanzi, emphasised that voter participation is a cornerstone of democracy. "If citizens are not informed, they cannot make informed choices. We must prioritise awareness so that every Ugandan has an equal opportunity to take part in the 2026 elections," she said.

With the election season fast approaching, leaders warn that failure to address this communication gap could undermine the credibility of the polls.
