Uganda: Archbishop Ssemwogerere Urges Ugandans to Renew National IDs Ahead of 2026 Elections

19 August 2025

The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Paul Ssemwogerere, has called on Ugandans to take part in the ongoing National Identity Card (ID) renewal exercise, emphasizing its significance for effective participation in the 2026 general elections.

Archbishop Ssemwogerere made the appeal shortly after renewing his own National ID at Lubaga Cathedral grounds, where the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) had set up a registration center.

He urged citizens not to take the exercise lightly, noting that a valid National ID is not only a prerequisite for voting but also for accessing various government services.

"I urge every Ugandan to ensure they have a National ID so that they can participate in the elections and choose truth and justice," Ssemwogerere said.

Seeking to dispel skepticism about the program, he added: "Do not have any fears about registering. This is one of the government's important programs, and we as the Church also trust it."

The event attracted a large turnout of residents, including Catholic priests, parishioners, and community members.

Also present was Moses Abeeho, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Lubaga Division, who commended the Archbishop for leading by example.

"We are very grateful to the Archbishop for being a role model in this national exercise," Abeeho said.

He further urged citizens to take advantage of the campaign, noting that the new National IDs come with enhanced security features and stressing that the process is free of charge.

The mass renewal campaign, rolled out nationwide by NIRA, has already drawn strong public participation as the country prepares for the 2026 elections.

With possession of a valid National ID mandatory for voter identification, financial transactions, and access to essential services, Archbishop Ssemwogerere's public endorsement is expected to encourage more Ugandans to join the exercise.
