Uganda: Mawanda Condemns Violence During NRM Cec Elections

Igara East Member of Parliament and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Director of Mobilization, Michael Mawanda Maranga, has condemned acts of violence against his supporters during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections, calling for peace and unity within the ruling party.

Mawanda, who was among 11 candidates contesting for the NRM Vice Chairperson seat for the Western Region but withdrew from the said he had withdrawn due to violence in the campaigns.

" Following yesterday's events, including the unfortunate attacks on several of my supporters, I made a difficult decision to withdraw my candidature for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for the Western Region," Mawanda said in a post on his X account.

He stressed that politics should not be reduced to violent contests, urging leaders and supporters to put peace and national progress above personal ambition.

"Politics is not a do-or-die affair, and as a leader, I prioritize the safety and well-being of my supporters and the unity of our party. I unequivocally condemn all forms of violence in our political processes. Such actions have no place in our democratic journey," he said.

Mawanda further called on NRM and PLU members to remain steadfast in supporting President Museveni and PLU leader Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba's vision for a stronger Uganda.

"Let us continue to rally behind the National Resistance Movement and work tirelessly to ensure that President Museveni secures over 80% of the vote in the upcoming elections, as guided by our supreme leader, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba," he added.

"Together, let us uphold the values of unity, peace, and progress as we build a stronger Uganda."
