One of the contenders in the National Female Youth MP race, Mercy Kanyesigye, has called on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) leadership to expedite the organization of fresh youth elections following their suspension this week.

President Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as the NRM national chairman, on Wednesday halted the national youth elections after chaos marred the process during the party's national delegates conference. He said the polls would be held "at an opportune time."

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Kanyesigye stressed that delaying the elections would only prolong uncertainty among the party's youth voters.

"I want to emphasize the urgent need to conclude this process. Our supporters remain in limbo, and it is only fair that they are given the opportunity to elect their leaders and secure our party flag bearers," she said.

Kanyesigye urged President Museveni, the NRM secretariat, and the party electoral commission to set a new date for the polls to ease anxiety among members.

"This will ensure inclusivity, restore confidence, and strengthen the values of participation, unity, and transformation that our party stands for," she added.

While commending delegates who braved three days at Kololo to participate in the disrupted process, she also noted the strain the suspension placed on them.

"Your resilience and commitment to the party are commendable. But I must also recognize the heavy burden this suspension has placed on our supporters, many of whom travelled long distances, leaving behind their families and places of work, only for the process to be halted," she said.
