Uganda: Police Detain Coaster Driver Over Overloading At Jinja Checkpoint

8 September 2025

Traffic Police have detained the driver of a commuter coaster, registration number UBP 991U, after it was found overloaded while traveling from Pallisa to Kampala late Sunday night.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the vehicle was intercepted at the Jinja New Nile Bridge checkpoint following a complaint from a concerned passenger.

"Upon inspection, it was discovered that extra chairs had been placed in the corridor of the vehicle, where passengers in excess of the allowed capacity were seated, posing a serious risk to road safety," Kananura said in a statement.

He commended the passenger who raised the alarm and urged the public to remain vigilant, saying road safety is a collective responsibility.

Police reiterated their call to passengers to report reckless behavior and violations that endanger lives on the road.
