Morocco: 22nd Marrakech International Film Festival - Oscar-Winning Director Bong Joon Ho to Chair Jury

Rabat — South Korean director Bong Joon Ho, winner of the world's most prestigious awards including the Oscar, will preside over the jury of the 22nd edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 6, 2025.

The jury of this edition will award the Étoile d'Or (Golden Star) to one of the 14 debut or second feature films competing in the international competition, which is dedicated to discovering filmmakers from around the world, the Festival said in a press release.

"For many years, the Marrakech Festival has celebrated and showcased films of great beauty that bring new breath to cinema. I am delighted and honored to now be part of this tradition," said Joon Ho upon the announcement of his appointment.

"I look forward to sharing a powerful cinematic experience with the audience and taking the time to reflect on the true value of cinema," he added, stressing that his excitement and enthusiasm "will be more than present in the theaters of Marrakech."

The South Korean filmmaker, distinguished with the most prestigious international honors, from the Palme d'Or to the Oscars, including the Golden Globes and the Baftas, made history with Parasite as the first non-English language filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Bong Joon Ho's presidency in Marrakech represents the meeting of a visionary body of work and a festival that, for over two decades, has brought together world cinemas at the heart of Morocco. His presence at the head of the jury promises to be a highlight, placing reflection on the role of cinema at the center of this edition and offering Moroccan and international audiences the resonance of a body of work whose impact continues to grow.

Bong Joon Ho was born in Daejeon, Republic of Korea, on September 14, 1969. His latest film, Mickey 17, released earlier this year, is his eighth feature, following major titles such as Barking Dog (2000), Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Mother (2009), Snowpiercer (2013), Okja (2017), and Parasite (2019).
