Uganda: Buganda Premier Urges Political Parties to Endorse Leaders Who Respect Kabaka

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has cautioned political parties against endorsing politicians who fail to show respect for the Kabaka and the broader interests of Buganda, as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.

Mayiga made the remarks at Bulange, Mengo, while receiving contributions, known locally as oluwaalo, from Kabaka's subjects in Ssingo and Mawokota, as well as members of the Buganda community residing in New England, United States.

The groups collectively contributed Shs73 million to support kingdom activities.

Individual contributions included Shs15 million from Busimbi Sub-county, Shs30 million from Bukuya Mutuba, Shs17 million from Buwama Parish, and Shs10 million from Buganda residents in New England.

Each delegation presented both the funds and detailed reports on the collections.

The guest of honour, Steven Jjumba, praised the spirit of unity and sacrifice demonstrated by the subjects.

Other leaders at the event commended the commitment of the people in supporting the Kabaka's development agenda.

In his keynote address, Mayiga emphasized the need for integrity and loyalty among political leaders, stressing that Buganda values individuals devoted to serving the people rather than pursuing personal gain or fame.

He urged political parties to exercise caution when distributing party cards, noting that endorsements should go to leaders who demonstrate respect for the Kabaka and uphold the kingdom's cause.

The Katikkiro also appealed to the Electoral Commission to conduct its work with fairness and impartiality, urging the body to remain neutral, organize free and fair elections, and avoid favoring any side.

Buganda's Minister for Local Government, Joseph Kawuki, echoed Mayiga's message, encouraging all Baganda--both at home and abroad--to actively support the kingdom and its development initiatives.

The event concluded with Mayiga presenting certificates of recognition to the contributing groups in appreciation of their efforts, reinforcing Buganda's tradition of celebrating unity and shared responsibility among its people.
