Uganda: Bakiga Cultural Dance - A Celebration of Heritage and Identity

In the hills and slopes of Kigezi is where we find entertainment of the Bakiga cultural dance that is a spectacle to behold, characterized by infectious energy and unbridled enthusiasm.

As drums beat, the dancers spring into action with their feet stamp out a lively rhythm on the ground. What set the Bakiga dance apart from other cultural dances is its dynamic and exuberant style, marked by impressive jumps and impressive movements.

With their voices loud while singing loud, alongside is the clapping and the infectious beat.

Agrey Matsiko born of Kabale noted that the Bakiga cultural dance is unique dance as compared to other cultures saying that Bakiga dance with too much energy as a sign of happiness s compared to other cultural dances which he describes as just fashion.

He adds that the Bakiga dance is a sign of appreciation for the good done or him or her.

"The lyrics in the Bakiga songs, most of the time carry meaningful message."Matsiko stated.

Prof.Manuel Mulenga lecturer of Culture at Kabale university stated that the energic way of Bakiga dance came away back from the weather conditions of the area since the area is ever cold stressing that once a Bakiga jumps while dancing she or he will attract warmth to his body.

He adds that after dancing one feels okay and relived.

Iam worried about the current technology which has changed the way of how cultural dances are supposed to be performed.

I call on government to create a special ministry in charge of overseeing and maintaining different cultures."Prof.Mulenga highlighted.

Dr.Micheal Muhumuza head of culture at Kabale university stressed that there is need for schools to promote culture adding that most people have totally changed the meaning of some cultural dances.

He adds that there is need to separate between cultural authenticity and artistic truthful is well revealed.
