Kampala -- The Electoral Commission (EC) has warned presidential aspirants that delays in returning nomination papers ahead of the 2026 elections could jeopardize their chances of contesting.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama revealed that while over 200 individuals have collected nomination forms, only 30 have submitted them so far, with several forms flagged for irregularities.

"We have received forms where minors signed as nominators, and in other cases, there was confusion with constituencies," Byabakama said.

"Those who delay will only have themselves to blame because the nomination deadline is next week."

At the EC headquarters, a few aspirants were seen submitting their paperwork. Among them was Bulira Frank Kabinga of the Revolutionary People's Party.

Teacher and aspirant Ssebwato Ivan rode a bicycle to the EC offices, citing financial challenges in gathering enough signatures.

"Money is preventing me from reaching all parts of the country to collect signatures," he said, adding that the commission advised him to return once he secured the required number.

Another aspirant, Kalyesubula Benjamin, criticized citizens demanding payments in exchange for their signatures.

"It has been a difficult process. People are asking for money just to nominate you, and that is very discouraging," he said.

Justice Byabakama also noted that the Commission is reviewing over 100 complaints related to local government nominations, with 30 cases already resolved.

Disputes within political parties regarding flag bearers remain under scrutiny.

"With just days remaining before the deadline, we are clear -- only aspirants who complete the process correctly and on time will be cleared to contest in the 2026 presidential race," Byabakama emphasized.
