Uganda: Three Parties At Crossroads Over 2026 Presidential Endorsements

25 September 2025

Three political parties the People's Front for Freedom (PFF), People's Progressive Party (PPP), and Democratic Party (DP) remain undecided on which candidate to back in the 2026 presidential election after failing to field their own flagbearers.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed eight presidential contenders, leaving the three sidelined parties weighing options on which candidate aligns with their political goals.

The Democratic Party is already grappling with internal friction after party president Norbert Mao declared support for President Yoweri Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The move has not been officially adopted by the party, sparking criticism among members.

PFF and PPP leaders say consultations are still underway. PFF Deputy Chief of Staff Harold Kaija said the party is proceeding cautiously, while PPP Chairman Sadam Gayira noted that nationwide consultations will guide their final decision.

Analysts warn that without their own candidates, the influence of these smaller parties may be limited.

While endorsements could sway regional dynamics or opposition coalitions, questions persist about their organizational strength and ability to shift voter sentiment.

With elections approaching, the three parties face mounting pressure to declare their positions, a decision that could either consolidate their relevance or deepen existing divisions.
