Makerere University has commenced disbursing the remaining portion of food and living-out allowances for government-sponsored students, following the release of second-quarter funds from the government.

In a statement issued by Guild President Churchill James Ssentamu, he confirmed that the funds have been received and that payments would be reflected in students' accounts before the end of October.

"The university has commenced the process of paying the remaining percentage of your allowances, and the money should be reflected in your accounts before the end of October," Ssentamu stated.

He also revealed that discussions with university management had been held regarding discrepancies in the national disbursement of allowances for government-sponsored students.

The Guild urged the administration to advocate for an increase in allowances, citing the rising cost of living in Kampala.

According to Ssentamu, the vice chancellor is already engaging the ministry of finance to ensure that student allowances are adjusted to reflect current economic realities.

"The 91st Guild Government is committed to promoting the welfare of both private and government-sponsored students, and we hope the Ministry of Finance will respond to our concerns with the urgency they deserve," he added.

The disbursement comes after weeks of concern among students over delays, which many said had affected their welfare and ability to meet daily expenses.
