Uganda: Kiira Motors Rolls in Electric Buses to Reduce Kampala Festival Traffic, Pollution

As Kampala gears up for the City Festival on October 12 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Kiira Motors Corporation is deploying four electric buses to provide free transport, aiming to ease traffic congestion and reduce harmful emissions during the event.

Eng. Ian John Kavuma, managing director of E-Bus Xpress, said the initiative goes beyond convenience, highlighting the role of sustainable mobility in urban planning.

"We are offering complimentary transportation free of charge with free WiFi on board. This initiative is aimed at decongesting the city and reducing harmful vehicle emissions during the festival," he said.

The buses will operate along key routes connecting City Square, Mulago, Kamwokya, Bukoto, Ntinda, Nakawa, Lugogo, and Jinja Road, with two buses covering each direction to ensure continuous service.

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki lauded the initiative as a timely intervention supporting an environmentally friendly and safe festival.

"We are very grateful to Kiira Motors Corporation for this partnership that supports our vision of a greener, smarter Kampala. The electric buses demonstrate Uganda's progress in embracing sustainable mobility," she said.

Councillor Solome Nakiridde Sebina, representing Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, encouraged city residents to participate in the festival, emphasizing its cultural, innovative, and inclusive focus.

"We encourage all city residents to come out and celebrate together as one Kampala family. The festival is about unity, creativity, and sustainability," Sebina said.

Organized under the theme, "Culture, Innovation and Sustainability," the festival is expected to attract thousands of participants while showcasing locally developed electric mobility technology.

The deployment of electric buses for large-scale public events forms part of KCCA's broader strategy to mitigate urban air pollution, promote smart transport solutions, and encourage adoption of sustainable technologies across the city.
