Uganda: EC, Police, and Presidential Agents Agree to Uphold Peaceful Campaigns

7 October 2025

The Electoral Commission (EC) has met with representatives of all eight presidential candidates and Uganda Police leadership to review the first week of the 2026 general election campaigns and address emerging concerns.

According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the meeting assessed campaign activities, listened to complaints from different camps, and agreed on measures to ensure that campaigns continue peacefully and in line with the law.

"The Electoral Commission today called a meeting of agents of all eight presidential candidates and Police leadership to review how the first week of campaigns has gone, hear emerging issues and complaints, and collectively agree on how to ensure that the campaigns continue to be peaceful," Mucunguzi said.

He noted that discussions emphasized the need for all stakeholders to adhere to the harmonized campaign programme, EC guidelines, and relevant electoral laws to promote fairness and order throughout the campaign period.

Mucunguzi added that all parties reaffirmed their commitment to resolving any disagreements through dialogue rather than confrontation.

"The parties committed to ensure that any issues that may arise should be resolved through dialogue, not confrontation," he said.

The EC called on candidates, their agents, and supporters to continue conducting campaigns responsibly and within the agreed framework to maintain peace and credibility in the ongoing electoral process.
