Uganda: Among Directs Iganga Leaders to Secure Land for New Regional Referral Hospital

12 October 2025

Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among has directed the Iganga District leadership to identify land for the construction of a new regional referral hospital to boost health service delivery in Busoga sub-region.

Speaking during a rally at Nawaningi Primary School in Iganga District, Among said the government intends to establish a third regional referral hospital in Busoga, after Jinja and the newly elevated Bugiri Hospital.

"We wanted to elevate Nakavule Hospital to referral status, but there is no land for expansion. Let the district leaders look for land where we shall construct a referral hospital, and the government will provide funding," she said.

Among made the remarks during her Busoga regional mobilization tour to canvass support for NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other party flagbearers ahead of the 2026 general elections.

She assured residents that the NRM government remains committed to improving healthcare and social infrastructure, pledging to allocate funds in the next Parliament for the hospital project once land is secured.

"Just know I will be Speaker in the next Parliament, so I am ready to appropriate money for everything you need -- as long as you give President Museveni votes," she added.

During the same event, Among fulfilled a Shs10 million pledge towards the construction of a new classroom block in Iganga, which she handed over to the LCV Chairperson, Ezra Gabula.

She also urged residents to rally behind the NRM in the 2026 elections.

"In 2021, you people of Iganga voted NRM members of Parliament but not President Museveni. You should change that voting style next year -- we need every position to be yellow," she said.

Among further revealed that President Museveni had approved the tripling of Parish Development Model funds and an additional Shs15 million for leaders in every parish.

The rally also served as a platform for NRM leaders in Iganga to express unity and readiness to work closely with the Speaker in strengthening party support ahead of the polls.

Patrick Kayemba, the NRM flagbearer for Kigulu South, admitted that some local leaders had previously backed former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga during the Central Executive Committee elections but said the focus now is on unity.

"In the previous CEC elections we didn't support you, but don't judge us by our past. Let's focus on the future -- I am ready to work with you," Kayemba said.

Mariam Seif, the NRM Woman MP flagbearer for Iganga District, also pledged loyalty to the current party leadership and vowed to rally women in Iganga behind the NRM agenda.

Among was accompanied by the Minister of State for Gender, Esther Anyakun, Kassambya County MP Daudi Kabanda, and other government officials.

The delegation urged residents to vote for President Museveni and all NRM flagbearers in the forthcoming general elections.

The event was marked by traditional dances, chants, and ululations as supporters celebrated the Speaker's visit and the government's promise to enhance service delivery in Iganga.
