Uganda: Five Arrested for Soliciting Bribes During Registration Exercise in Kabale

The territorial police in Kabale have apprehended five individuals, including three National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) assistant registrars and two brokers, for allegedly soliciting bribes during a registration exercise.

The suspects were arrested on October 16, 2025, in Butanda and Kahungye sub-counties. The police recovered Shs 485,000 and Shs 86,000 from the suspects. A broker, who was acting as a cook, allegedly fled with a substantial amount of money.

Elly Maate police spokesperson says that intervention followed numerous complaints about bribery, with clients allegedly paying between Shs 10,000 and Shs 12,000 each.He adds that the suspects will face charges in court upon completion of the ongoing investigation.

"The arrests serve as a warning to others,the registration exercise is free of charge. The police are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent process."Maate noted.
