Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament, Betty Nambooze Bakireke, has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission's recent announcement changing the general presidential and parliamentary election date to Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Speaking during NBS Barometer on Tuesday, Nambooze emphasised the importance of adhering to established procedures in the electoral process.

"The date for a general election is supposed to be gazetted, not changed without a genuine reason," Nambooze said.

Her comments come in response to the Electoral Commission's confirmation of the election date, which has sparked discussions among political leaders and citizens alike.

Nambooze, a staunch member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) used the political talk show to back the party's 'protest vote' strategy stating that protesting doesn't necessarily mean military confrontations with the police, or tear gas as seen in previous electoral cycles and that the opposition party's goal can be achieved through peaceful means.

"We are students of Mahatma Gandhi; we protest without violence," she said.
