Uganda: Even If 10 Opponents Come, I'll Get 99 Percent - Speaker Among

22 October 2025

Two woman are pushing every button they can to contest the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament seat against Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

But the Speaker is declared confidence that she will get 99% of the vote even if 10 or more women stood up to challenge her.

Bukedea District Election Officer Joel Mugyenyi confirmed that aspirants from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the National Unity Platform (NUP) are preparing to submit their nomination papers.

During the NRM primaries, Speaker Among's potential challenger was disqualified by the Electoral Commission over allegations of not being a bona fide resident of Bukedea.

FDC aspirant Norma Susan Okedi has raised similar concerns, accusing the EC of attempting to disenfranchise her from the district.

"We maintain that our candidate is a legitimate resident and has the right to contest," she said.

Ms Among, who was nominated earlier today on the NRM ticket, expressed confidence in her re-election bid.

"Even if 10 come, I will get 99% because of the things I have done for the people of Bukedea," she said.

"I have a hospital giving free services, a nursing school offering half bursaries, and a boarding secondary school providing free education for the girl child."

Earlier this week, the National Unity Platform unveiled Florence Asio as its candidate for the Bukedea Woman MP seat, with the party principal Robert Kyagulanyi alleging without evidence that Electoral Commission and courts had the NUP candidate, the FDC candidate and an independent candidate removed from the voters' register in order to block them from running against Among in Bukedea

The stage is set for a competitive race in Bukedea as voters prepare to head to the polls.
