IN SHORT: A video of bishop David Kodia speaking about police officers allegedly sent by "Farouk" to raid his home is being shared with claims that it happened following his sermon at Raila Odinga's state funeral in October 2025. The video is real, but it is from 2023.
A video has gone viral across social media in Kenya showing David Kodia, bishop of Bondo's Anglican Church of Kenya, speaking to reporters.
Bondo is a municipality in Siaya county, western Kenya.
In the clip, Kodia says armed police officers came to his home claiming they had been sent by someone named "Farouk".

The video is being shared with captions claiming that the incident happened after Kodia gave a sermon at Raila Odinga's funeral on 18 October 2025.
Odinga died while receiving treatment in India on 15 October. President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning and announced that Odinga would be given a state funeral.
One widely viewed 18 October post on X reads: "BREAKING: Bishop David Kodia says that Farouk sent police in uniform and armed with guns to invade his home after he gave a sermon in Nyayo Stadium."
Another post pairs his remarks with a photo of Farouk Kibet, a political aide close to Ruto, with the caption: "Sad as ACK Bishop David Kodia has claimed that Farouk Kibet is targeting him. Pray for him."
The videos have been widely reposted and collectively viewed over 1.5 million times.
But was Kodia's home really raided following his sermon at Odinga's funeral? We checked.
Kodia criticises corrupt leaders
Odinga and Ruto were the main contenders in Kenya's 2022 presidential election, which Ruto narrowly won. In 2023, Odinga led weekly anti-government protests, mainly over the high cost of living. Over time, however, relations between the two leaders improved, and in 2024, they signed an agreement to form a "broad-based government".
During his sermon at Odinga's state funeral in Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kodia strongly criticised corrupt leaders who used their offices to enrich themselves. He called on public officials to emulate Odinga's legacy of fairness, human rights advocacy and service to the people. His sermon received loud applause and a standing ovation from the crowd.
Soon after, the viral video began circulating online, suggesting that the government was retaliating for his fiery remarks.
But keyword searches for the incident online show that the clip is not recent. It was recorded in April 2023, more than two years before Odinga's death.
At that time, Kodia was chair of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) for the Nyanza region. The police visit he described took place at his home in the city of Kisumu while he was away. The officers reportedly questioned his family and claimed they were investigating him for money laundering, a claim the bishop dismissed. The NCCK condemned the raid.
The incident happened during the period when Odinga was leading anti-government protests. Days earlier, Kodia had led the NCCK in supporting Odinga's right to lead mass action, saying the protests raised valid concerns about the high cost of living and unfair government appointments. He had also urged dialogue between Ruto and Odinga.
So, while the incident in the video did happen, it took place in 2023, not in 2025. The posts circulating recycle an old clip to make it look recent.
