Uganda: UCC Highlights Digital Skills As Key for Uganda's Future Workforce

13 November 2025

The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), George William Nyombi Thembo, has called on universities to prioritise digital skills and emerging technologies to prepare graduates for the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.

He made the remarks while speaking at the 18th graduation ceremony of ISBAT University.

Addressing students under the theme "Transforming Higher Education through Integration of Emerging Technologies," Thembo stressed that artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and other digital tools are reshaping industries, and graduates must be equipped to thrive in this changing landscape.

"Artificial Intelligence can deliver knowledge, but it cannot inspire curiosity. Virtual Reality can simulate empathy, but it cannot feel compassion. The true power of education lies in the human spirit in mentorship, dialogue, and discovery," George William Nyombi Thembo said.

He urged universities to go beyond conventional teaching methods and become hubs of innovation, knowledge creation, and societal impact. Thembo highlighted UCC's role in promoting digital literacy, fostering innovation, and ensuring inclusive access to technology in line with Uganda's national digital transformation agenda.

"The future workforce must be ready for a digital economy. Universities that embrace technology will not only remain relevant but will also empower students to drive Uganda's economic growth," he added.

The address underscores a growing emphasis by regulators and academic leaders on bridging the skills gap in higher education, ensuring students graduate with competencies that meet the needs of the 21st-century economy.
