Uganda: Buganda Holds Historic Manchester Event, Celebrates Diaspora Contributions

17 November 2025

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has conveyed a special message of appreciation to Baganda living in the United Kingdom, recognizing their dedication and contributions to the Kingdom and Uganda.

The message was delivered by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Administration & ICT, Prof. Twaha Kaawaase Kigongo, during a historic Buganda Kingdom event in Manchester.

The gathering brought together Baganda who have lived in the UK for many years, providing a platform for networking, strengthening unity, and discussing issues affecting the community. While similar events are typically held in London, this marked the first formal Buganda Kingdom assembly in Manchester.

Kigongo relayed the Kabaka's warm greetings, praising attendees for their commitment to improving communities, supporting Buganda's growth, and exemplifying the Kingdom's values abroad.

"No one will build Buganda on our behalf because we are the rightful owners. We are the foundation, the custodians, and the ones who must work together to support all initiatives of the Kingdom. I am grateful for your continuous efforts and proud of the tangible impact you are making," Kigongo said.

He highlighted Buganda's rich 900-year history, noting the resilience of the Kingdom through 36 Kabakas and its restoration in 1993 following the ascension of Kabaka Mutebi II. He emphasized the theme of the gathering, "Expanding Our Horizons through Unity," stressing that collective effort amplifies impact.

Kigongo also urged community leaders to ensure transparency in handling finances and resources, entrusting funds to honest and accountable individuals.

Ssaalongo Geoffrey Kibuuka, Chief of the Buganda Kingdom in the UK and Ireland, thanked the Kabaka's Deputy and Baganda in Europe for their continued dedication.

He acknowledged contributions from other Ugandan communities, including Bunyoro Kitara, Lango, Acholi, Tooro, and Bagisu, who participated in the event.

The gathering featured cultural performances in Luganda and concluded with the distribution of gifts, celebrating the ongoing contributions of Baganda living abroad. The event reinforced the enduring ties between Baganda at home and abroad, highlighting unity, service, and cultural pride.
