Uganda: Minister Nabakooba Orders Strict Enforcement of Land Eviction Ban During Elections

The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, has issued a strong directive to all Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), urging them to fully enforce the government's order prohibiting illegal land evictions, particularly during the ongoing election period.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on land management, Minister Nabakooba emphasized that no Ugandan should be forcefully removed from their land at a time when communities are already tense and politically active.

"I want every RDC in this country to ensure that the directive on stopping land evictions is implemented without compromise," Nabakooba said.

"This is not the time for anyone to take advantage of the election season to threaten or dispossess people of their land."

She noted that government has received increasing reports of individuals and groups attempting to evict residents under the guise of political excitement and campaign activities.

"Let it be clear: no eviction should take place without following the lawful process. Anyone who violates this directive will face the law," she added.

Nabakooba reminded local leaders and security committees of their duty to protect vulnerable communities from exploitation.

She also urged the public to report any attempts at illegal evictions to their district authorities, reaffirming the government's commitment to safeguarding land rights for all Ugandans.
