Uganda: Laropi Ferry Resumes Service After Two-Week Maintenance

The MV Laropi Ferry, the vital waterway link between Moyo and Adjumani Districts across the River Nile, has officially resumed operations following a 15-day maintenance exercise.

The Ministry of Works and Transport temporarily suspended the ferry earlier this month to allow engineers to carry out essential servicing aimed at enhancing safety, reliability, and overall performance of the vessel.

During the maintenance, technicians conducted comprehensive mechanical checks, lubrication, engine servicing, and a general inspection of the ferry's structural components.

Officials at the site confirmed that all repairs were successfully completed, and the ferry has been cleared for full operational use.

Normal ferry schedules are now back in place, offering relief to hundreds of daily commuters, traders, health workers, and students who rely on the Laropi-Umi route as their primary connection between the two districts.

The Ministry emphasized that this routine maintenance is part of broader national efforts to improve water transport safety, noting that more extensive rehabilitation of the MV Laropi is planned in the near future.

During the temporary suspension, travellers had to use alternative, longer routes, such as Kampala-Moyo-Yumbe-Koboko-Arua-Karuma-Gulu-Atiak-Adjumani or the Kampala-Moyo-Obongi-MV Obongi Ferry-Adjumani route, which caused delays and additional costs.

Transport authorities are urging passengers to adhere to safety guidelines while boarding and to promptly report any operational challenges to ensure continued safe service on the ferry.
