Uganda: Museveni Tells Mbarara Rally Peace Has Enabled Region's Growth

1 December 2025

President Museveni has told residents of Mbarara that the peace Uganda enjoys today--from Karamoja to Kisoro and Busia to Bundibugyo--is the result of the NRM's politics of fairness and unity, not the sectarianism that once pushed the country into conflict.

Addressing a rally in Mbarara, Museveni said the routes he once travelled "with guns" during the liberation wars are now roads of peace, commerce and stability, crediting the transformation to sustained security over the last three decades.

Museveni announced that Nyakishara had been selected for a new international airport, chosen by Chinese and Brazilian partners because its location will shorten global flight routes. He said the facility would match Entebbe in scale and create new economic opportunities for the region.

He added that government will upgrade the Bwizibwera-Nsika-Nyakashaka-Nyakabirizi road as well as the Biharwe-Rwantysinga-Kaguhanzya-Bwentama-Bwizibwera route to support growing trade and transport needs.

"Mbarara's steady progress shows what peace and correct policies can achieve," he said, thanking residents in Runyankore: "Nimwebare munonga, Abanya Mbarara."
