Tororo Municipal Council has been presented with the draft design for a new modern abattoir to be constructed on council land in Mukuju Central Village, Tororo North County, along the Tororo-Mbale road.
The design was prepared by Infrastructure Cost & Management (ICM) Consultant Ltd on behalf of the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development.
The project, estimated at Shs7.7 billion, is set to be funded by the World Bank under the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development (UCMID) programme, pending final approvals.

The facility will include a slaughterhouse, lairage, generator house, waste collection point, dormitory, canteen, and animal holding centres, among other features.
Michael Kayenzi, a senior architect at ICM, confirmed that a feasibility study had been conducted on the allocated land, which was deemed suitable for the project.
He noted that Tororo is among the few municipalities that have met the requirements to qualify for this multi-million-shilling investment.
Kayenzi advised the council to secure reliable water and electricity connections and suggested that, if funding is limited, the project could be implemented in phases, starting with the slaughterhouse alone, which may cost over 3 billion shillings.
Tororo Municipality Deputy Town Clerk Okoth Ramanus Kitong highlighted that the modern abattoir will enhance the consumption of quality meat, improve public health, and contribute to a more productive population.
He emphasized that access to safe and nutritious food is essential for promoting healthy urban living, which the project aims to support.
UCMID Coordinator Emmanuel Odongo Owino called on the public to cooperate with municipal authorities, particularly regarding right-of-way requirements for related infrastructure, such as roads being pegged under the programme.
