Angola: Caculo Cabaça Dam With 40% Physical Completion

Luanda — The construction of the Caculo Cabaça dam, in the Province of Cuanza-Norte, is progressing well, with approximately 40% of the physical work completed. The first turbine, out of a total of four, is being developed and is expected to begin operating in 2027, according to the Ministry of Energy and Water.

To further boost the project, two addenda to the dam construction contract were signed on Tuesday in Luanda, in a ceremony presided over by the secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos.

The first was signed between the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Chinese construction company China Gezhouba Group Company Limited (CGGC) related to the contract for the supply, assembly and commissioning of electromechanical equipment to achieve the financial rebalancing of this contract.

At the same time, the second document was signed between the CGGC and the German engineering company VOITH Group, for the subcontracting of equipment supply and assembly, to achieve the financial rebalancing of the respective contract.

The project started on August 4, 2017 and is comprised with a 103-meter-high compacted concrete gravity dam, with a nominal capacity of 2,172 megawatts, distributed across two power plants, the main (underground) plant and the ecological flow plant (at the foot of the dam), with a reservoir of 16 square kilometers of flooded surface and 436 cubic hectometers of storage volume.

The infrastructure includes four units, each with 530 megawatts and an ecological power plant with 52 megawatts.

This dam, when fully operational, will increase the reliability of the interconnected grid, giving more power into it throughout the national territory, and also allowing for the export of energy to neighboring countries.

It will also be possible to leverage the country's industrialization process with clean and environmentally friendly energy, making this project a factor towards development.

Regarding social and economic prospects, with greater access to electricity, more businesses will emerge, with more investments, increasing access to employment and greater dignity for citizens, as well as enabling greater economic dynamism at the national level, which will greatly improve the living conditions of Angolans.
