Uganda: Gen Muhoozi Inspects Newly Completed Hoima City Stadium

The Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Thursday conducted an extensive inspection of the newly completed Hoima City Stadium, a flagship sports infrastructure project finished five months ahead of schedule.

Built over eighteen months, the state-of-the-art stadium is set to be officially commissioned by President Museveni in the coming days.

During the tour, Project Manager Murat Altun showcased the facility's modern features, which include a semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, fully equipped VIP suites, modern changing rooms, an external training pitch, and other world-class amenities.

The complex also features a 2,000-seat indoor arena complete with a basketball court.

The inspection drew senior government and project officials, including the Chairman of Suuma, Selim Bora; CEO Envar Sayan; Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang; Chairman of the National Council of Sports; and the Mayor of Hoima City.

Speaking during the visit, Gen. Muhoozi emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining the facility's high standards.

He urged sports authorities, including Minister Ogwang and the National Council of Sports, to ensure that the quality achieved in Hoima becomes the benchmark for future infrastructure projects across the country.

The 20,000-seat multi-purpose stadium is one of Uganda's designated venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), to be co-hosted with Kenya and Tanzania.

Its completion marks a significant milestone in Uganda's preparations for the continent's premier football event.

Hoima City Stadium is among three national stadiums earmarked for Afcon matches.

Gen Muhoozi reaffirmed his commitment to the advancement of sports in Uganda, noting that investment in high-quality infrastructure is essential for nurturing local talent and enhancing international competitiveness.

"Providing and maintaining top-tier sports facilities is fundamental to developing Uganda's athletes and ensuring success on the global stage," he said.

The Hoima City Stadium represents a major government investment aimed at expanding regional sports infrastructure, stimulating economic growth in the Hoima economic hub, and ensuring Uganda fully meets its obligations as an Afcon 2027 co-host.
