Tonny Sserubiri, a Principal Geologist in charge of exploration at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, has reaffirmed the steady progress, strengthened accountability measures, and growing local participation in Uganda's oil and gas sector.
Speaking on Spotlight Uganda hosted by Sanyuka Television under the theme, "Transforming Uganda's Energy Future through Partnership and Accountability," Sserubiri emphasized that the country's petroleum developments are on track and transitioning from exploratory phases to commercial readiness.
"Oil and gas developments have been progressing well. We've been working hard, and next year is going to be even better. The oil we are getting now is just a sample, but we are preparing to release full production," he stated.
Sserubiri highlighted regulatory compliance, safety, environmental protection, and transparency as core pillars of Uganda's petroleum governance. He noted that adherence to these frameworks has strengthened public trust.

Reflecting on societal perceptions, he observed a positive shift in public dialogue since oil extraction began in Hoima, indicating increased understanding of the sector's benefits.
He also emphasized the socioeconomic impact, pointing out that "Ninety percent of Ugandans are involved in the oil and gas sector. Job opportunities have been created both directly and indirectly," highlighting opportunities across the industry's value chain.
However, Sserubiri acknowledged barriers for local investors, calling for legal and financial safeguards to ensure confidence and encourage domestic participation.
Reaffirming the Ministry's commitment to integrity, he added, "We also reduce corruption and fraud in the petroleum sector mainly through contracts. We ensure they are awarded to the right people."
