Uganda: Mobi Kills Suspected Pig Thief in Buikwe

7 December 2025

Police in Buikwe District are investigating an incident in which an unidentified man was beaten to death by a mob after he was allegedly found with a stolen pig.

According to the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, SP Hellen Butoto, the murder is believed to have occurred during the night of December 5, 2025, at Kafumbe Village, Bbibo Parish in Kawolo Sub-county, Lugazi Municipality.

Authorities say that at around 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, the area chairperson, Jane Namayega, received information from residents about a body lying along the Lugazi-Kasokoso road.

Upon visiting the site, Namayega found the lifeless body of a man--estimated to be about 35 years old--lying next to a dead pig wrapped in a green sack, an item believed to be at the center of the attack.

She immediately notified Lugazi Police Station, and officers were dispatched to secure and examine the crime scene.

The victim's body which had no form of identification on him, was taken to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination as police work to establish his identity.

Investigators suspect that the man was lynched by a mob accusing him of pig theft, but the exact circumstances leading to the killing remain unclear.

Police have condemned the act, reminding the public that mob justice is illegal and that suspects should be handed over to lawful authorities for due process.

"Inquiries are still ongoing," SP Butoto said, urging anyone with information that could help identify the deceased or the perpetrators to report to the nearest police station.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over rising cases of mob action in some communities across the country.
