Uganda: Iuiu Cancels Mature Entry Certificate for NRM Flag Bearer for Kitagwenda

4 January 2026

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has cancelled a Mature Age Entry certificate that had been issued to Kitagwenda County National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary aspirant Robert Mugabe after investigations established that the documents he used to qualify for the examination were fraudulently obtained.

In a formal communication dated January 2, 2026, the University, through the Office of the Academic Registrar, announced the recall and cancellation of Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139, which had been issued under the Mature Age Entry Scheme.

"The University established that the document(s) you presented to qualify to sit for the Mature Age Entry Aptitude Test of May 2021 were obtained fraudulently," the Academic Registrar stated in the letter.

According to IUIU, the matter was exhaustively reviewed by the University's Executive Board during its 382nd meeting held on December 31, 2025. The session was attended by the affected individual together with his legal representative.

"The Executive Board deliberated on these findings and resolved to recall and cancel Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139 in accordance with Section 7.4(iii) of the General University Examination Regulations (2023)," the statement reads.

As a result of the decision, the University nullified the certificate with immediate effect and withdrew all academic rights and privileges arising from it.

"The certificate issued to you under the Mature Age Entry Scheme is nullified and cancelled with immediate effect, and any rights, privileges, or academic benefits arising from the said certificate are hereby withdrawn," the University emphasized.

IUIU further directed the holder of the cancelled certificate to return the original document to the Office of the Academic Registrar within fourteen (14) days from the date of receipt of the notice.

"Failure to comply with this directive may result in further administrative or legal action as may be deemed appropriate by the University," the Academic Registrar warned.

The decision was communicated by Dr. Adam A. Alli, the Academic Registrar of the Islamic University in Uganda, and copied to senior University management, including the Rector, the Vice Rectors for Academic Affairs and for Finance and Administration, the University Secretary, as well as the concerned law firms.

The development comes at a critical time as the country prepares for the forthcoming general elections and underscores IUIU's commitment to upholding academic integrity and strictly enforcing its examination and admission regulations.
