Uganda Railways Corporation Outlines Vision for Regional Transport Leadership By 2040

The Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation (URC), Benon M. Kajuna, has reaffirmed the corporation's commitment to transforming rail and marine transport as a cornerstone of Uganda's mobility and trade infrastructure.

Speaking during Spotlight Uganda hosted by NBS Television on Monday under the theme, "Challenges facing transport infrastructure and citizen mobility in Uganda," Kajuna highlighted ongoing reforms and strategic investments aimed at repositioning URC as a competitive transport provider within the region.

"Our vision is to be a preferred cargo and passenger mode of transport within East Africa by 2040. This vision is anchored in rehabilitating railway infrastructure, expanding marine transport services, and improving operational efficiency," he said.

Kajuna noted that URC continues to play a critical role in inland water transport through its marine services on Lake Victoria.

The corporation currently operates routes connecting Port Bell to Mwanza in Tanzania, as well as Port Bell to Jinja, facilitating cross-border trade and domestic cargo movement.

"These marine routes are essential for reducing transport costs, easing pressure on road infrastructure, and enhancing regional connectivity," he said.

On railway infrastructure, Kajuna outlined URC's phased rehabilitation plan. Following progress on the Tororo-Gulu railway line, the corporation is now preparing to rehabilitate the Tororo-Kampala line, one of the most economically significant rail corridors in the country.

"We are strategically improving railway infrastructure to restore reliability and efficiency. After the Tororo-Gulu line, our next focus is the Tororo-Kampala line, which is vital for cargo movement to and from the capital," he said.

Kajuna acknowledged the broader challenges facing Uganda's transport sector, including aging infrastructure, funding constraints, and increasing demand for affordable and efficient mobility.

He emphasized that devitalizing rail and marine transport is key to decongesting roads, lowering logistics costs, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
